Rep. Grijalva Calls for Investigation into Military Actions at Nogales Port of Entry

WASHINGTON, D.C.— After reports and images surfaced of military units blocking access to two lanes of traffic, installing razor wire, and conducting military exercises at the Nogales Port of Entry; Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“Treating Nogales as a war zone because of a manufactured crisis from the Trump administration is nothing short of an outrage. Although Trump’s hysteria-inducing ‘caravan’ is weeks away from arrival at the border of Arizona, the consequences of his reckless military deployment are having an immediate impact on border communities. New barriers and longer lines divide families, hinder economic activity, and further militarize the Nogales community.

“A full investigation is needed to ensure that the military’s actions in Nogales are not violating its authority at the border. Furthermore, the Department of Commerce should conduct an analysis to assess the economic impact that military deployments and subsequent closure of lanes at ports of entry have on border communities. Make no mistake; Trump’s reckless disregard for the rule of law will no longer be met with impunity.”
