Rep. Grijalva Applauds Funding for Nogales IOI Included in President's Budget

WASHINGTON— This week, President Trump released his annual budget. While containing deep cuts to important domestic programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and Social Security, it also contained funding for the Nogales International Outfall Interceptor (IOI). The IOI pipeline is approximately 8.5 miles long and transports wastewater from Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, Arizona to the Nogales International Wastewater Treatment Plant. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“The Nogales IOI is a public health risk for the people of Southern Arizona, and it’s long past time for it to receive the attention it deserves. Last year the House recognized this as a public health priority by overwhelmingly supporting my amendment to dedicate this funding. After years of deteriorating infrastructure and fighting for this funding for my district, I am pleased to see the President has included this in his budget.

“While the rest of the budget was the expected combination of Trump’s disdain for working families and fearmongering concerning the border, the inclusion of the IOI funding is a welcome addition. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to pass this critical funding to ensure people are not exposed to water contamination.”

Rep. Grijalva had requested additional funding for IBWC for the IOI. Last year he passed an amendment to direct $4 million within the IBWC to clarify the responsibility for maintenance and operation of the IOI. Additionally, he introduced H.R.3204, the Nogales Wastewater Fairness Act to clarify the issues of responsibility of the IOI.
