Jul 19, 2007 Press Release
In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service (NPS), to be celebrated in 2016, Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, and Rep. Raúl Grijalva, Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, today introduced legislation to provide a much-needed funding boost for National Parks.?This centennial is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to passing on our National Parks to future generations in even better shape than we found them,? said Grijalva. ?The initiatives funded though this legislation, especially those which will use our Parks as classrooms for young people, will create new generations of stewards to safeguard our National Parks for the next 100 years.?

Representative Raúl M. Grijalva recently introduced legislation that would help stop the illegal poaching of bears and conserve global bear populations. HR 3029, The Bear Protection Act of 2007, would address the harmful trade in bear gallbladders and bile without impacting a state?s ability to make fundamental decisions regarding bear management. It would also work towards deterring bear poaching and facilitate prosecution of wildlife criminals while assisting state law enforcement officers in their effort to protect their resident bear populations. ?The United States should have a simple, uniform policy against the killing of our American black bears for their gallbladders,? said Grijalva. ?We must stop the unnecessary slaughter of these animals and protect them from the wanton destruction by unscrupulous dealers, who care more about profits than our natural resources.?

Vice President Dick Cheney has been asked to testify at a July 31 House Natural Resources Committee oversight hearing on his apparent role in influencing scientific and policy decisions at the Department of the Interior. A former Member of the Committee, Cheney?s intervention in the development of a 10-year water plan for the Klamath River, that courts later called arbitrary and in violation of the Endangered Species Act, resulted in the 2002 die-off of an estimated 77,000 salmon near the California-Oregon border. This led to the subsequent collapse of the West Coast salmon-fishing industry as reported in The Washington Post on June 27, 2007.

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva today backed legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to ease the backlog that has made it difficult for Americans to receive passports. The legislation was unanimously approved by the House on a voice vote. ?My office has heard from many of my constituents, who have missed vacations or waited months just to receive a passport,? said Grijalva. ?This common sense legislation will make it easier for the State Department to process applications and send travelers on their way.?

The U.S. House of Representatives last night voted by a margin of 333- to 83 to pass H.R. 1851, the Section 8 Voucher Reform Act (SEVRA). SEVRA corrects the formula for voucher allocation by using more recent and accurate statistics. Affordable housing advocates estimate the use of outdated information has led to the loss of 150,000 vouchers since 2004. In 2005, the Department of Housing and Urban Development found 6.5 million low-income renter households that did not receive housing assistance had paid more than half of their income for rent and utilities or lived in severely substandard rental housing. This number increased by 20 percent between 2001 and 2005.

Today, I voted in support of the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act which requires American forces to begin redeploying within 120 days and to complete the transition to a limited presence in Iraq by April 1, 2008. This resolution came to a vote the same day the Bush Administration released the interim report to Congress on the results of troop escalation and the progress on benchmarks included in the last Iraq Supplemental. The interim report shows that no progress has been made on half the benchmarks, and the validity and significance of the claims on the others are either transparently false or highly questionable.
