Grijalva today congratulated the University of Arizona's Disability Resource Center on its newly announced $500,000 funding stream to continue and enhance its ongoing project to assist injured and disabled veterans seeking higher educational opportunities. The money comes from the Department of Education and supports a program begun in 2008 when Rep. Grijalva arranged startup funding.

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva today congratulated La Paz Regional Hospital in Parker for receiving a $78,523 grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program. The money will pay for two new ultrasound machines and expand the cardiac imaging services at the hospital and the affiliated clinic in Quartzsite.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded the University of Arizona a five-year, $660,000 grant to strengthen the school's outreach program for at-risk children, youth and families. The money comes through USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and will be given to the University's Strengthening Families Program.

Grijalva today applauded the July 15 House Natural Resources Committee vote to pass the Comprehensive Land, Energy and Aquatic Resources (CLEAR) Act, which responds to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and reforms the nation's energy and mineral extraction system. The bill abolishes the Department of the Interior's (DOI) scandal-ridden Minerals Management Service and establishes three new agencies in its place with separate functions to prevent the conflicts of interest that prevailed in previous administrations.

Grijalva today highlighted a new study showing that 85.7 percent of Arizona small businesses with fewer than 25 employees will be eligible this year for tax credits to help pay the cost of optional employee health coverage. The tax credit program is a key element of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed earlier this year.

The recipients of new Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants include Family Housing Resources, which received $5.1 million under HUD's Section 202 program; Tucson's La Frontera Center, which received nearly $1.66 million under the Section 811 program for persons with disabilities; Maricopa County, which received a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $2.4 million and an Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) of $98,000; and the City of Avondale, which received a CDBG of just over $545,000.

Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the loan will make possible the financing, construction and start-up of the Solana Generating Station, which will be the largest in the world when construction is complete.

Grijalva today highlighted the more than 300,000 one-time $250 rebate checks sent out nationwide earlier this week to people whose drug costs are in the so-called Medicare Part D donut hole, which affects millions of consumers around the country. The checks, sent as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will help defray the costs of expensive prescription drugs.
