Grijalva: DHS Should Not Handle Voting Rights

Tucson – Congressman Raúl Grijalva released the following statement following President Trump’s announcement that the Commission on Voter Fraud would be dissolved.

“While this scam election commission has finally been exposed for what it was – a complete waste of time and resources – it also leaves us with more questions,” said Rep. Grijalva. “Any personal and sensitive information that was collected in an effort to expose unwarranted claims of voter fraud should be immediately returned to states so they can properly protect that information.

But more alarming, we should not allow a law enforcement agency, such as DHS to be held responsible for voting rights in this country. DHS is the least capable federal agency to work on voter issues. They are among the least transparent and least forthcoming. That in and of itself is dangerous to the solvency of our democracy. Trump is transforming DHS’ role way beyond their mandate and setting up a dangerous precedent. Trump’s goal is to intentionally remove voters from the voter rolls keeping U.S. citizens from voting in this year’s midterm elections. We should be tackling voting access issues instead of beating the same drum on voter fraud claims that have been unequivocally proven false.”
