Rep. Grijalva Celebrates New Transit Grant for Tucson Community

TUCSON This week, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the City of Tucson a $950,000 Transit-Oriented Development Grant to support the development of opportunity zones along a planned Bus Rapid Transit corridor. Rep. Grijalva previously wrote a letter in support of the City of Tucson ?and City of South Tucson's grant application.

“Tucson has led the way in innovative transportation solutions to revitalize communities in Southern Arizona through the Sun Link Streetcar line and the billions in dollars of business development that has followed,” said Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. “This grant will allow the City of Tucson and City of South Tucson to build on that legacy, extend a planned bus rapid transit corridor, bring more opportunity and development to Tucson residents, and increase overall mobility and connectivity in the area.”

The grant will focus on a proposed bus rapid transit corridor that extends from Downtown Tucson and the Sun Link Streetcar through the Oracle Avenue area, through the City of South Tucson, and continue to the Tucson International Airport. Funding will allow for the identification and development of denser, mixed-income, and mix-use development that will provide more opportunities for affordable housing and businesses.

“I’m grateful for the tireless advocacy of our Congressional Delegation in securing this funding for Tucson," said Mayor Regina Romero. "This is a unique opportunity to plan proactively and identify what we can do to secure affordable housing options, help generational local businesses thrive, and provide Tucsonans and visitors alike with multimodal options to move around our city. These dollars will help us advance our goals of improving mass transit, strengthen regional connections between our existing transportation systems, such as the Tucson International Airport, and move us one step closer to climate action."
