Rep. Grijalva Condemns Republican Tactics on Yemen War Powers Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to block debate on a War Powers Resolution that would end the U.S. military support for the War in Yemen. Rep. Grijalva was not on the floor to vote. In response, he issued the following statement:

“Unfortunately, I was not present on the floor of the House of Representatives at the time of the vote due to a miscommunication about the number of votes in the series. It was not an abstention, but an honest mistake. Had I been present, I would have voted ‘nay.’

“When it comes to my support for ending U.S. involvement for the War in Yemen, my record speaks for itself. I co-sponsored all three War Powers Resolutions—including the most recent one—and have consistently condemned the U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s reprehensible actions in Yemen.

“The Republican Party’s complicity in Saudi Arabia’s actions is nothing short of an accessory to war. Whether it is this Republican Congress suppressing any debate on the U.S. role in Yemen or the Trump Administration’s egregious refusal to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, it’s time for this travesty of justice to end.

“Like many of my constituents, I am horrified by the images and stories coming out of Yemen, and I remain committed to using congressional authority to take action. Come January, I will work with the leadership of my party to make this issue a priority and end our country’s immoral and unauthorized involvement in Yemen—something Republican leadership has utterly failed to do.”
