Rep. Grijalva Denounces Trump Budget Cuts to Education and Labor Priorities

WASHINGTON— This week, President Trump released his annual budget, which included major cuts to education and labor programs. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“President Trump’s budget is an assault on working families. But with a Secretary of Education like Betsy DeVos, it’s no wonder the budget carries such disdain for public education. In addition to funding DeVos’ private school voucher program, it makes deep cuts to important programs that serve low-income students and English Language Learners while cutting funding for critical after school programs and arts programs. Under the proposed block grant funding plan, Arizona could lose up to $65 million in federal education aid—enough to pay the salaries of over 1,000 teachers. To fund his tax cuts for the wealthy and giant corporations, his budget completely eliminates workforce programs that benefit Native Americans and migrant workers while significantly underfunding the Office of Disability Employment Policy.

“While Trump touts low unemployment rates and a strong stock market as the hallmarks of a strong economy, working Americans know the truth. This economy isn’t working for everyone. Instead of deep cuts to programs that invest in our students and workforce, we should strengthen these programs to equip our students and working adults with the tools they need to thrive. This budget accomplishes none of this, and is a nonstarter in the House of Representatives.”
