WASHINGTON— Today, the House of Representatives passed the No Ban Act. The bill would prevent the president from abusing their authority to restrict the entry of non-citizens into the United States under the Immigration and Nationality Act and expand existing nondiscrimination provision to prohibit discrimination based on religion. Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva cosponsored the legislation and issued the following statement after its passage:

“When former President Trump used an executive order to enact a racist Muslim ban on immigrants from certain Muslim-majority nations in the first week of his presidency, it was an egregious abuse of presidential power. Although President Biden has since rescinded the order, this legislation is critical to ensuring that no future president has the power to ban certain immigrants on the basis of racist criteria. I’m proud to support legislation like this that upholds our immigrant heritage and prevents executive overreach that only seeks to sow division and scapegoat immigrants.”
