Rep. Grijalva Will Vote in Favor of Protecting USPS

TUCSON Today, the House of Representatives will vote on the Delivering For America Act, a bill that will provide $25 billion in emergency appropriations to the Postal Service and will prohibit the implementation of any changes to operations and service levels in effect on January 1, 2020. Additionally, it will require the Postal Service to treat all election mail as first-class to ensure that all Americans can safely exercise their right to vote with confidence.

“The politically-motivated attacks on the Postal Service should concern every American who values the right to vote and the integrity of our elections,” said Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. “This is about more than delivering mail. It’s about combatting President Trump’s attempts to dismantle the Postal Service and potentially suppress the vote of millions of Americans before Election Day. I’m voting for this legislation to not only safeguard USPS—but safeguard our democracy.”

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Republican mega-donor, has implemented numerous recent changes at USPS that have negatively impacted mail service including removing blue mail collectors in various areas, deactivating mail sorting machines at processing centers, and eliminating overtime for postal workers. After public pressure, DeJoy stated that he would pause the new initiatives until after the election.

“DeJoy’s assurances are not enough, and we need a commitment that he will immediately reverse all the damage he has already done at USPS,” continued Rep. Grijalva. “As President Trump spreads lies about vote-by-mail and attempts to sabotage the postal service in the process, I’m proud to stand with my colleagues and vote for this important legislation. Our future depends on it.”
