Grijalva and Chu Call for Investigation on Sexual Assaults in ICE Facilities
Monday December 18, 2017Washington, D.C. – Rep. Grijalva released the following statement after he and Rep. Judy Chu led 71 Members of Congress in sending a letter to top Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ) officials demanding increased accountability and transparency over claims of sexual assault, abuse, and harassment within immigrant detention facilities. The letter comes in response to a complaint filed by Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC) which highlights the prevalence of sexual misconduct and the lack of recourse for victims within immigrant detention facilities. In the letter, the lawmakers highlight the fact that, "The Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security received a total of 33,126 complaints of sexual and/or physical abuse against DHS component agencies between January 2010 and July 2016, according to CIVIC's complaint. Grijalva today praised the House of Representatives vote to approve the Senate's S.3817 bill, which improves the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, Family Violence and Prevention Services Act (FVPSA), and the Adoption Opportunities Act. Grijalva, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, today lauded the decision by Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker in San Francisco that California's Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage violates the Constitution's 14th Amendment equal protection clause. In his ruling, Walker wrote that the law "fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same sex couples."< Read more >
