Tuesday September 05, 2017TUCSON – Congressman Raul M. Grijalva (AZ-03) released the following statement after the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The program, established under President Obama in 2012, has shielded more than 800,000 young individuals from deportation and granted them the opportunity to remain in the U.S. to work or go to school. A recent Center for American Progress assessment found that ending the DACA program would remove at least $433.4 billion from the U.S. GDP cumulatively over a decade. In Arizona alone, there are nearly 28,000 DACA recipients. Ending DACA would cost Arizona more than $1.3 billion in annual GDP.< Read more > - July 2017

Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement after Secretary of Education and long-time private-education advocate, Betsy DeVos announced that the Department of Education would be rolling back two important Obama-era regulations that protected students and held for-profit colleges accountable for fraudulent activity. The first regulation, known as gainful-employment, was instituted to prevent students from becoming victims of fraud or paying an exuberant amount for a degree without guarantees that their educational investment would pay off. Grijalva Leads 144 Lawmakers in Call to Keep Libraries Funded
Thursday April 06, 2017WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) today led 144 lawmakers in sending a bipartisan letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, urging them to appropriate $186.6 million for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) for FY 2018. The LSTA provides grants for libraries in every state to support summer reading programs, develop resources for families with differently abled children, works with local business communities to expand their online presence, and acquire technology tools to close the "digital gap" in rural and underserved communities, among other programs. Arizona Receives $70 Million to Turn Around Low-Performing Schools – Money Will be Available For Fall Term
Wednesday April 07, 2010Arizona will receive nearly $70 million to turn around its lowest achieving schools as part of a $3.5 billion nationwide education initiative funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and through standard 2009 budget appropriations. The School Improvement Grant program, which administers the funds, is an annual federal effort to improve schools with the worst educational and graduation records.< Read more > -
Grijalva Congratulates Tucson Schools for Receiving Grant to Expand Arabic Culture and Language Instruction
Monday April 05, 2010Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva today congratulated Cholla Magnet High School and Safford Magnet Middle School in Tucson for receiving more than $58,000 from the Department of Education to expand their Arabic language and culture programs. Cholla is already a local leader in the teaching of Arabic, an increasingly important subject as American businesses and agencies look to increase their presence in the Middle East. Grijalva Announces Bill To Help Struggling Schools Prevent Dropouts, Encourage Pursuit of Higher Education
Friday November 20, 2009Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva today announced the release of H.R. 4122, the Graduation for All Act, which seeks to decrease dropout rates and provide assistance to struggling middle schools and high schools around the country. The bill, co-sponsored by Grijalva, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller and several other lawmakers, authorizes $2 billion in competitive grants for low-performing high schools and their feeder middle schools, increases financial aid awareness and career planning, and supports strategic partnerships between high schools, middle schools and local communities to turn around struggling institutions, among other features.< Read more >
