Granting Agency: Federal Emergency Management Agency
Amount: Variable ($380 million total available)
Purpose: Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants help fire departments hire new firefighters and recruit and retain volunteer firefighters

Recipients: City, tribal, regional and state transportation authorities
Granting Agency: Department of Transportation
Amount: Variable – $10 million minimum, $500 million total available
Purpose: Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants fund capital investments in surface transportation infrastructure and are awarded on a competitive basis. Projects will be evaluated on safety, economic competitiveness, livability, environmental sustainability, state of repair and short-term job creation

Recipient: Community Services Department of Tucson
Granting Organization: Department of Housing and Urban Development
Amount: $1,351,498 (formula grant), $59,315 (Replacement Housing Factor first increment)
Purpose: HUD provides funds each year to public housing agencies for debt service, finance costs, and housing modernization and development. HUD is making approximately $1.8 billion available in fiscal year 2012 for about 3,100 grantees. These funds are granted through the U.S. Housing Act of 1937.

Recipient: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Granting Organization: Federal government appropriation
Amount: $2,532,000
Purpose: This funding is part of the Corps’ 2012 work plan to finish the Nogales Wash Project and restore Old Tucson highway Bridge. The funds will allow the Corps to award a contract to finish work on the bridge.

Recipients: International Sonoran Desert Alliance
Granting Organization: U.S. Department of Agriculture
Amount: $163,807
Purpose: The grant is one of 27 made this week, totaling $4.8 million, by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to improve eating habits and reduce poverty-related hunger.
Facts: USDA’s HouseholdFood Security in the United States, 2010 reportfound that the percentage of very low food security declined from 5.7 percent of households in 2009 to 5.4 percent in 2010. The USDA study indicates that in 2010, 17.2 million households in America had difficulty providing enough food due to a lack of resources. The number of food insecure households in 2010 was relatively consistent with statistics released in 2008 and 2009.

Granting Organization: U.S. Forest Service
Amount: $13,289,827
Purpose: The money comes through the Secure Rural Schools Program, which funds rural public schools and roads and specific county programs. The program was extended in 2008 for an additional four years, and this payment marks the final amount Arizona will receive unless the program is extended again.
