City of Tucson to Receive $16 Million from Recovery Act

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva welcomes the announcement that the City of Tucson will receive over $16 Million in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) formula funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The funds will go to construct Phase III of the Sun Tran Bus Storage Maintenance Facility (BSMF).

“This award is a great investment for Tucson’s public transportation system,” stated Grijalva. “The completion of this facility will ensure that Sun Tran remains successful and viable for years to come.”

The City and Sun Tran are planning to expand the bus route system over the next five years as part of the 20-year Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan. In order to add more buses to the fleet, Sun Tran needs an additional bus storage and maintenance facility since the current facility is at capacity. The new facility will be located near Interstate 10 and Prince Road and will accommodate 150 new buses.

Sun Tran is an award-winning regional public transportation system, servicing more than 21 million passenger trips each year.
