Rep. Grijalva Concludes Congressional Delegation to United Nations Climate Summit in Madrid

WASHINGTON— On Tuesday, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva returned from a Congressional Delegation trip led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the 2019 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25) held in Madrid, Spain. In addition to Rep. Grijalva and Speaker Pelosi, 13 Members of Congress joined the delegation and expressed their support for the climate action commitments made in the Paris Climate Agreement. President Trump began the formal withdrawal of the United States from the agreement in November 2019.

“The climate crisis is here, and it’s already wreaking havoc on communities in the United States and around the world,” said Rep. Grijalva. “In the face of the Trump Administration’s climate denial, our delegation sought to reassure the global community that Congress and the majority of the American people remain committed to the Paris Climate Agreement and increasing global cooperation to solve the climate crisis.”

Over the course of the COP25 Summit, the delegation met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, H.M. King Felipe VI of Spain, President Pedro Sanchez of Spain, and European Parliament President David Sassoli. Additionally, the delegation met with international and U.S.-based NGOs actively working in communities around the world to address the climate crisis.

“Meeting with global climate advocates and governments committed to combatting the climate crisis reaffirmed my view that our country must take urgent legislative action to protect our planet for generations to come,” continued Rep. Grijalva. “Failure to do so is an abdication of our global responsibility to lead and will jeopardize our planet for generations to come.”
