Rep. Grijalva on H.R. 1: Democrats Live Up to Promise to Restore Power to the People

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, House Democrats introduced H.R. 1, a sweeping bill that reduces the role of big money in politics, strengthens access to voting, and restores basic ethical standards for government officials—including the Trump Administration. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“For too long, wealthy donors and special interests have reaped the benefits of a Republican-controlled Washington while the interests of everyday families are left behind. Voters spoke loud and clear in November when they elected a slate of Democratic candidates who vowed to put the American people over profiteering corporations and dark money.

“The Democratic reform starts with ending the dominance of big money in politics, extending conflict of interest laws to the President and Vice President, and ensuring the integrity of our elections by strengthening our voting systems and upholding the right to vote for every American. H.R. 1 is a first step toward achieving a vision of our democracy, where every vote is equal, every voice has the opportunity to be heard, and money does not equate to political influence.”
