Rep. Grijalva on Singapore Summit: Diplomacy Must Not Fail

WASHINGTON, DC—In response to the meeting of President Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Un in Singapore, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“Today’s summit—though flawed—was an important first step toward ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula and reducing the threat of a devastating nuclear war. Although quick to trumpet his accomplishments, President Trump must understand that diplomacy and broad foreign policy objectives are not achieved overnight. I remain hopeful that this first meeting will begin the process of sustained dialogue that will ultimately result in peace and security for both Koreas, our East Asian allies, and the entire international community.

“While Trump’s newfound affinity for diplomacy is politically necessary for his moment in the spotlight, it is important that he not abandon diplomatic talks at the first sign of difficulty. Whether violating the JCPOA, rolling back diplomatic progress with Cuba, or withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement; Trump and his cabinet of anti-diplomacy war hawks are no strangers to destroying hard-won diplomatic victories and embarrassing the United States on the global stage. As the President continues alienating our western allies and damaging our international credibility, Congress and the American public will be watching the administration’s next steps closely. Trump must not sacrifice democratic values and human rights for a photo opportunity.”
