WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement five years after President Obama signed the Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive order into law that has allowed more than 750,000 children and young adults to remain in the United States without the fear of deportation. While the future of the program remains unclear under the Trump Administration, recent incidents and statements by top administration officials have indicated that DACA recipients may be subject to deportation.
“DACA has proven to be one of President Obama’s finest achievements during his time in office,” Rep Grijalva said. “Thanks to DACA, hundreds of thousands of children and young adults have been able to step out of the shadows and go to school, work and travel without the fear of deportation looming over their heads. Undeniably, DACA has been tremendously beneficial to our nation’s economy, opening new paths and opportunities for hundreds of thousands of motivated young adults throughout the country. The positive contributions Dreamers have made and continue to make should be recognized, not understated. I strongly urge the Trump Administration to maintain and expand the program and provide sufficient protections to ensure that DACA recipients are not the targets of any deportation efforts.”
