WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement after Secretary of Homeland Security, John F. Kelly met with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
“I can best summarize this meeting with Sec. Kelly as disappointing and intentionally confusing,” Rep Grijalva said. “When asked for clarification on the issue of law-abiding parents being separated from their U.S. citizen children, Sec. Kelly could not provide an answer. When pressed on the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals (DACA), a program his Department oversees, Sec. Kelly would not commit to any legal or legislative position. Regarding the issue of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Central Americans, most of whom are fleeing violence and prosecution in their home countries, Sec. Kelly stated, “I do not know what we’re going to do with Central Americans and TPS.” The uncertainty and distress the immigrant community has faced since day one of Trump’s administration seems to have no end. If this meeting with Sec. Kelly is any indication, the Trump Administration will continue to brush-stroke immigrants as criminals that need to be deported.”
