In New Video, Arizonans Urge Permanent Grand Canyon Protection Ahead of Expected Vote on Rep. Grijalva’s “Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act”

WASHINGTON— In a newly released video, Arizonans from all walks of life describe the need to protect the Grand Canyon from new uranium mining claims ahead of an expected vote later this month on Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva’s Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act. The video, available on Twitter here and Facebook here, includes voices from the Native American, sportsmen and business communities.

Rep. Grijalva introduced the bill in February. A vote is expected on the House floor during the last week of October.

The Trump administration declared uranium a “critical mineral” earlier this year despite scientific experts note supporting the move. The nation’s uranium supply is not at risk, and there is no guarantee that uranium corporations operating on new claims – around the Grand Canyon or elsewhere – would not simply export their product.
