October has been an important and productive month. With Election Day approaching I wanted to remind folks that the right to vote is the heart of our democracy. . If you need help voting, there are resources available to you: https://www.usa.gov/how-to-vote. If you are voting by mail, remember that your ballot must be received by county election officials by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day: November 8th, 2022. 

Here’s a rundown of what we accomplished this month:

• On October 5th, I announced that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) selected the Hensel Phelps Construction Co. to provide design-build services for the modernization and expansion project at the San Luis I Land Port of Entry. GSA awarded the initial contract for $228.1 million. Partial funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which I, along with Congressional Democrats, helped pass. Modernizing our ports of entry allows for safer, more efficient border operations. Read the full announcement here.

• On October 12th, I announced $82,500 in grant funding for Campesinos Sin Fronteras from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of a $110 million federal initiative to improve health care facilities in rural towns across the United States. This Rural Development investment will be used to rehabilitate and equip a building in Gadsden, Arizona with the necessary furniture and equipment to provide critical health services to the area. • The January 6th Committee concluded its’ hearings and subpoenaed the former president to explain his role in perpetuating the Capitol attack. Please click here to read my full statement. 
• On October 18th, I visited Pima Community College’s new Flexible Industry Training (FIT) Lab. This project was one of the ten Community Project Funding initiatives I secured for our congressional district.   It provides $1 million for equipment for their new Advanced Manufacturing Building.  
• On October 19th, I along with Representatives. Ann Kirkpatrick, Tom O’Halleran, and Greg Stanton and Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) urged United States Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Q. Brown, Jr. to initiate a Time Critical Removal Action (TCRA) to accelerate the cleanup of PFAS contamination related in part to firefighting training and military mission‐related activities conducted by the Arizona Air National Guard 162nd Wing at the Morris Air National Guard base (ANGB) in Tucson, Arizona. • It was a pleasure to chat with the Aspiring Latino Lawyers club on October 20th at the University of Arizona and to learn about their goals and aspirations for our community.
• I was honored to be a speaker at the Tribal Border Alliance- Tribal Border Summit on October 20th. We discussed the importance of Tribal sovereignty, cross-border relations and security of tribal lands and the United States, and the need for further training for federal border officials on proper respect for tribal lands and culture.
• Throughout my time in Congress my office has been able to build an incredible network of former interns, fellows and staffers. On October 22nd I convened the first Grijalva Alumni Caucus where I was able to catch up with former Grijalvistas.
• On October 25th, I assembled the Grand Canyon Inter-Tribal Working Group to ensure that our legislation to protect the Grand Canyon from mining includes that Tribes are consulted with every step of the way. 
• I was proud to announce on October 26th that Somerton Elementary School District will receive $2.37 million in federal funding as recipients of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean School Bus Program rebate competition. The federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, that I helped passed, will provide Somerton Elementary with six electric buses and related-infrastructure that will accelerate the transition to zero emission vehicles and produce cleaner air in and around schools and communities. 
• On October 27th I had a productive visit to Yuma, where I met with San Luis Mayor Sanchez, Incoming San Luis Mayor Riedel, Somerton Mayor Anaya and County Superintendents.  
• Later in the day I had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends at the Desert Valley Senior Center in Somerton. I was proud to provide the Senior Center with $16,000 in Community Project Funding that will go toward upgraded kitchen and exercise equipment for the center to better serve the senior community of Somerton
• We finished the day by meeting with leaders from local NGOs doing the important work of aiding refugees and asylum seekers at the border. 
• My office attended the Gathering of American Indian Veterans on October 29th, where we met with the Native American Veterans from throughout Southern Arizona and shared how my office’s constituent services can help maximize their veteran benefits. • On October 29th, we hosted the 1st Annual Día de los Muertos community altar at the El Pueblo Community. It was a celebration of life, family, culture, and friendship. We hope to make this event a lasting part of our community. 

Apply for Student Loan Forgiveness 

Apply today (but no later than Dec. 31, 2023) for up to $20,000 in federal student loan forgiveness. This one-time debt relief is provided by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) as part of the Biden-Harris Administration student debt relief plan.   

As a result of a court order, the application is open, but debt discharge is paused.  The Department of Education is still encouraging eligible individuals to y apply if you are eligible.  

In addition to standard federal student loans, parent PLUS loans are also eligible for student loan forgiveness. This means that a family could double or triple the total amount of loan cancellation. Learn more here.

Octubre ha sido un mes importante y productivo. Con el día de las elecciones acercándose, quería recordarles a todos que el derecho a votar es el corazón de nuestra democracia. Si necesita ayuda para votar, hay recursos disponibles para usted y pueden ser encontrados en esta página web: https://www.usa.gov/how-to-vote. Si va a votar por correo, recuerde que los encargados de elecciones de su condado deben recibir su boleta antes de las 7:00 p. m. el día de las elecciones, que sería el 8 de noviembre de 2022.

Aquí hay un resumen de lo que logramos este mes:

• El 5 de octubre, anuncié que la Administración de Servicios Generales (GSA por su nombre en Inglés) de EE. UU. seleccionó a la compañía de Hensel Phelps Construction para brindar servicios de diseño y construcción al proyecto de modernización y expansión a la frontera con Mexico en el puerto de entrada terrestre de San Luis, Arizona. • El 10 de octubre, presentamos las presentaciones del Concurso de Arte del Congreso que recibimos en el Festival de las Artes de la Patagonia. ¡Siempre me impresiona el talento y la creatividad de los jóvenes artistas que envían su trabajo!
• El 12 de octubre, anuncié una otorgación de $82,500 para Campesinos Sin Fronteras del Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos (USDA por su nombre en Inglés) como parte de una iniciativa federal de $110 millones para mejorar las instalaciones de atención médica en pueblos rurales de los Estados Unidos. Esta inversión de Desarrollo Rural se utilizará para rehabilitar y equipar un edificio en Gadsden, Arizona, con los muebles y equipos necesarios para brindar servicios de salud críticos en el área. • El 18 de octubre, visité el nuevo laboratorio de capacitación industrial flexible (FIT por su nombre en Inglés) de Pima Community College. Este proyecto fue una de las diez iniciativas de Financiamiento de Proyectos Comunitarios que yo aseguré en el Congreso para nuestro distrito electoral. Se proporcionará $1 millón para equipos para su nuevo Edificio de Fabricación Avanzada.
• El 19 de octubre, yo junto con los Diputados. Ann Kirkpatrick, Tom O’Halleran y Greg Stanton y el Senador Mark Kelly (Demócrata de Arizona) aconsejaron al Jefe de Estado Mayor de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos, General Charles Q. Brown, Jr. a iniciar una Acción de Remoción de Tiempo Crítico (TCRA por su nombre en Inglés) para acelerar la limpieza de la contaminación por PFAS (productos químicos artificiales) relacionada en parte con el entrenamiento de extinción de incendios y las actividades relacionadas con la misión militar realizadas por la Guardia Nacional Aérea de Arizona escuadrilla 162 en la base de la Guardia Nacional Aérea de Morris (ANGB por su nombre en Inglés) en Tucson, Arizona. • Fue un placer conversar con el club de Aspirantes a Abogados Latinos el 20 de octubre en la Universidad de Arizona y conocer sus metas y aspiraciones para nuestra comunidad.
• Tuve el honor de ser un orador en la Alianza Fronteriza Tribal en la Conferencia Fronteriza Tribal el 20 de octubre. Discutimos la importancia de la soberanía tribal, las relaciones transfronterizas y la seguridad de las tierras tribales y los Estados Unidos, y la necesidad de mayor capacitación para los funcionarios fronterizos federales sobre el debido respeto a las tierras tribales y la cultura.
• A lo largo de mi tiempo en el Congreso, mi oficina ha podido construir una red increíble de antiguos pasantes, becarios y miembros del personal. El 22 de octubre convoqué el primer Camarilla de Exalumnos Grijalva donde pude ponerme al día con ex Grijalvistas.
• El 25 de octubre, reuní el Grupo de trabajo intertribal del Gran Cañón para asegurar que nuestra propuesta de ley para proteger el Gran Cañón incluya que se consulte a las tribus en cada paso del proceso.
• Me enorgulleció anunciar el 26 de octubre que el Distrito Escolar Primario de Somerton recibiría $2.37 millones en fondos federales como beneficiarios del Programa de Autobuses Escolares Limpios de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de EE. UU. (EPA por sus siglas en inglés). Estos fondos forman parte de la Ley de Infraestructura Bipartidista, que ayudé a aprobar, y proporcionará a la Primaria Somerton seis autobuses eléctricos e equipo que acelerará la transición a vehículos de cero emisiones y producirá un aire más limpio en las escuelas y comunidades a sus alrededores.
• El 27 de octubre, tuve una visita muy productiva a Yuma donde me reuní con el alcalde de San Luis, Sanchez, el alcalde entrante de San Luis, Riedel, el alcalde de Somerton, Anaya, y los superintendentes del condado.
• Más tarde tuve la oportunidad de juntarme con amigos en el Centro para Personas Mayores de Desert Valley en Somerton. Me enorgulleció ayudar al Centro para Personas Mayores a asegurar $16,000 en fondos para Proyectos Comunitarios que se usaran para mejoras muy necesarias para que el centro sirva mejor a la comunidad de personas mayores de Somerton.
• Terminamos el día reuniéndonos con líderes de organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONGs) locales que realizan el trabajo importante de ayudar a los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo en la frontera.
• Mi oficina asistió a la Reunión de Veteranos Indígenas Estadounidenses el 29 de octubre, donde nos reunimos con los Veteranos Indígenas de todo el Sur de Arizona y compartimos cómo los servicios de mi oficina pueden ayudar a maximizar los beneficios para veteranos. El 29 de octubre, organizamos el primer altar comunitario del Día de los Muertos en el Centro Comunitario el Pueblo. Fue una celebración de la vida, la familia, la cultura y la amistad. Esperamos que este evento forme parte de nuestra comunidad por años.

¡Someta su solicitud hoy para el alivio de la deuda de préstamos federales para estudiantes!

Aunque un tribual federal de apelaciones hay puesto en pausa al programa de alivio de la deuda de préstamos federales para estudiantes del Presidente Biden, los prestatarios aún pueden someter su solicitud antes de que se tome una decisión final. Aplique aquí.

Además de los préstamos estudiantiles federales, los préstamos PLUS para padres (Parent PLUS Loans en inglés) también son elegibles para el alivio de la deuda. Esto significa que una familia podría duplicar o triplicar el monto total de la cancelación del préstamo. Aprenda más aquí.
