SOMERTON, Ariz. – Today, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03) announced $1,035,000 for the Cocopah Indian Housing and Development as part of an Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
The Cocopah Indian Tribe will construct ten (10) 465 square foot housing units for the elderly. This will help alleviate the housing shortage and provide temporary shelter for families impacted by COVID-19.
“Housing is one of the most fundamental human rights, and the federal government has historically failed to provide fair resources to address overcrowding and housing shortages for our tribal populations. As Chair of the Natural Resource Committee, I am proud to be able to push to include funds for tribal housing in our pandemic response laws,” Grijalva said. “I am happy to see the direct benefits for the Cocopah Indian Tribe in my district as I know this critical project is going to alleviate the impacts of the housing crisis caused by the pandemic and provide needed housing for elderly tribal members.”
