Rep. Grijalva Applauds Passage of Dream and Promise Act, Calls on Senate to Protect Dreamers

WASHINGTON— Today, the House of Representatives passed the Dream and Promise Act. The legislation provides a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and DACA recipients, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients, and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients. After the vote, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“Dreamers, TPS recipients, and DED recipients are our neighbors, friends, and loved ones. After years of attacks on their character, livelihoods, and legal status under the Trump Administration, this Congress voted to permanently protect them and offer them the pathway to citizenship they deserve. Now, millions will be able to live, work, attend school, and serve in our military without fear of deportation.

“While I voted for this legislation, it does not go far enough. I fought to strip the ‘secondary review’ provisions in the bill’s current form supported by some of my Democratic colleagues that would block some impacted individuals from qualifying, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to remove these unnecessary provisions in the final version of the bill.

“For too long, Dreamers, TPS recipients, and DED recipients have endured far too much upheaval and political games in their lives. This must end. It’s time for the Senate to urgently pass this legislation so that they can fully contribute to and live freely in the country they call home.”
