Rep. Grijalva Blasts Court Ruling Allowing Public Charge Rule to Proceed

WASHINGTON— Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration can implement its public charge rule as a challenge plays out in a lower court. The rule will prevent individuals from attaining legal status based on their use of certain government benefits. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“President Trump has repeatedly expressed his disdain for immigrants from developing countries, and this rule is the manifestation of his racist attitude. Make no mistake, it’s not about saving taxpayer dollars. It’s about forcing immigrants to pass a wealth test and punish them for utilizing benefits that they are legally entitled to.

“The true public charge in this country is President Trump. Each year of his presidency we’ve wasted millions of taxpayer dollars shuttling him back and forth to his golf course at Mar-A-Lago while he poured millions more into his private businesses and hotels. Instead of attacking immigrants who are good for our economy and good for our country, the Trump Administration should take a good look at the real culprits within their own ranks overly reliant on taxpayer dollars. In the meantime, I’ll continue fighting for immigrant families and ensuring they have the safety, security, and resources they need to help their families and this country thrive.”
