WASHINGTON – On Thursday, the Biden administration announced the re-implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy. This Trump-era policy was rescinded by the Biden administration, but reinstated under federal court order. The policy forces asylum-seeking families to await their asylum hearings in Mexican border towns, exposing them to numerous dangers. According to human rights groups, there have been over 1,500 reports of kidnappings and attacks against migrants expelled under MPP during the Trump administration.
Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03) issued the following statement:
“While the federal courts have mandated the re-implementation of this inhumane and illegal policy, the Biden administration must end the MPP as soon as possible and restore the United States’ legal obligations to asylum-seekers. It’s heartbreaking to continue to see the thousands of families and children subjected to violent crime and horrible conditions as they await for their date in court. Migrants deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and due process.”
