TUCSON— Last night, President Donald Trump declared victory in the 2020 Presidential Election before millions of ballots were counted in key states. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“In our democracy, elections are decided by the voters—not by edicts from any one candidate. Record numbers of voters have cast their ballots for new leadership led by Vice President Joe Biden & Senator Kamala Harris. We must wait until every vote is counted.

“For four years, we have witnessed Donald Trump denying reality, abusing his power, inciting bigotry, and corrupting our institutions. He’s waged a war against mail-in ballots, deployed a band of thieving lawyers to suppress the vote, and repeatedly incited his supporters to doubt the legitimacy of the election if he loses. These latest attempts to undermine the election are an assault on our republic and a threat to everything we stand for. 

“We will not allow President Trump to steal this election from the voters who overcame a pandemic and multiple barriers to voting to make their voices heard. We will fight the President’s dishonesty, ego, and cowardice with truth, decency and democracy on our side. Every American who casts their ballot, whether in person, by mail, by dropbox, or drive-thru will have their vote counted. They will decide the next President, not Donald Trump.”
