Rep. Grijalva Praises Upcoming FHFA Town Hall to Help Phoenix Homeowners

TUCSON, AZ – Congressman Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement today thanking the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) for their upcoming town hall on the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP). The town hall, which takes place on Friday, June 12th from 10-11:30 AM at the Arizona Capitol Museum, will help Phoenix residents take advantage of refinance options that can save them up to $2400 per year on their mortgage.

“Ensuring homes are full instead of empty also ensures safer neighborhoods and cities, and a more prosperous and economically stable nation,” Rep. Grijalva said. “But for too many homeowners in Arizona and around the country, staying current on their mortgage during the housing crisis meant continuing to pay while property values plummeted. We must ensure everyone who does qualify for this program has the information they need to take full advantage of it, and I commend the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s new leadership for renewing this effort.”

Statistics show minority communities are still struggling the most with the housing recovery.  A report from UCBerkeley’s Haas Institute found that “the legacy of predatory lending has resulted in a disproportionately negative impact on African American and Latino communities.”
