Rep. Grijalva on Rollback of Gainful Employment Rule: A Gift to Predatory For-Profit College Executives

TUCSON, AZ— Today, the Department of Education announced its plan to eliminate the gainful employment rule. The rule held for-profit career education programs accountable for ensuring their graduates earn enough money to repay their student debt. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“By eliminating the gainful employment rule, Secretary DeVos is once again allowing for-profit colleges to ruthlessly prey on vulnerable students—including veterans—and trap them in a never-ending cycle of debilitating debt. It’s no secret that these institutions use deceptive business practices and shady marketing techniques to recruit prospective students for expensive, subpar programs. As their graduates struggle to repay their debt with worthless certificates and degrees from these institutions, their corporate executives line their pockets with taxpayer-funded federal student aid. Today’s decision rewards their predatory behavior and leaves prospective students more vulnerable than ever. It’s clear that under DeVos’s failed leadership, the interests of the for-profit industry supersede the responsibility of the Department of Education to protect students from fraudulent practices.”
