TUCSON— Today, the New York Times reported new details on the Trump Administration’s family separation policy after they obtained a draft copy of the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General’s investigation into the policy. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:
“These findings are horrifying and confirm that the Trump Administration intentionally created a policy to separate children from their families to deter immigration while having no plan to reunite them. It implicates the leaders of multiple federal agencies and the White House as willingly complicit actors in executing a horrific policy that has brought untold pain, suffering, and trauma to asylum-seeking children and their parents. It’s the embodiment of Donald Trump and Stephen Miller’s immigration policies where the cruelty is the point.
“Those who participated in the egregious crime should be held accountable, and the Trump Administration should undertake every effort to reunite those families it separated. I will continue working in Congress on comprehensive reforms to our immigration laws that will prohibit a future administration from committing human rights abuses.”
