WASHINGTON- Today, Representative Raul M. Grijalva (AZ-07) issued the following statement:

“The Senate missed an opportunity to create thoughtful and lasting immigration reform and to confront and humanely manage our humanitarian crisis at the border.  Instead, the bill doubles down on punitive measures that read like an extreme Republican wish list filled with failed Trump-era immigration policies.”

“The bill lacks any legal pathways to deal with the status of Dreamers, farm workers, or undocumented individuals who have been vital members of our communities for decades. I’m disappointed that time has been wasted on what could have been a productive attempt to create real immigration reform.”

“While the Senate legislation includes additional resources for personnel, border communities, and minor visa fixes, it does nothing to address the root issues of migration. We desperately need real immigration reform that includes long-term realistic and humane solutions that guarantee safe and orderly entry to this nation. The legislation fails to meet the moment.”

“Despite my disappointment with this incomplete legislation, Speaker Johnson and the extreme House Republican majority have declared the bill ‘dead on arrival’ proving the point that they want to use immigration as a political campaign wedge in the 2024 election. The February 8th field hearing by Republican members of the Natural Resources Committee and the Republican Western Caucus is proof. The hearing is fraud, simply political red meat, and fearmongering. This fake hearing will be shrill, dishonest, and without real solutions.”

“Republicans have no interest in solving the humanitarian crisis at the border and the fact that the Republicans in the House will not allow the bill to be debated and voted upon is cynical and cruel. For the Democrats in the House to be denied the opportunity to represent their constituencies on this national issue, is a disrespect to our democracy and the role as their Representatives. As the crisis on the border increases, House Republicans will bear the responsibility for that crisis. While doing nothing is not an option, this Senate bill has a long way to go before I would lend my support.”

“El Senado perdió la oportunidad de crear una reforma migratoria reflexiva y duradera y de confrontar y manejar humanamente nuestra crisis humanitaria en la frontera.  En cambio, el proyecto de ley duplica las medidas punitivas que se parecen como una lista de deseos republicanos extremos llena de políticas de inmigración fallidas de la era Trump”.

“El proyecto de ley carece de vías legales para lidiar con el estatus de los Dreamers, los trabajadores agrícolas o las personas indocumentadas que han sido miembros vitales de nuestras comunidades durante décadas. Estoy decepcionado de que se haya perdido el tiempo en lo que podría haber sido un intento productivo de crear una verdadera reforma migratoria.”

“Mientras la legislación del Senado incluye recursos adicionales para el personal, las comunidades fronterizas y las reparaciones menores de visas, no hace nada para abordar los problemas fundamentales de la migración. Necesitamos desesperadamente una reforma migratoria real que incluya soluciones realistas y humanas a largo plazo que garanticen una entrada segura y ordenada a esta nación. La legislación no está al tanto del momento”.

“A pesar de mi decepción con esta legislación incompleta, el presidente de la cámara Johnson y la extrema mayoría republicana de la Cámara de Representantes han declarado que el proyecto de ley está ‘muerto a su llegada’, lo que demuestra el punto de que quieren usar la inmigración como una cuña de campaña política en las elecciones de 2024. La audiencia del 8 de febrero por parte de los miembros republicanos del Comité de Recursos Naturales y el Caucus Republicano del Oeste es una prueba. La audiencia es un fraude y alarmismo. Esta audiencia falsa será estridente, deshonesta y sin soluciones reales”.

“Los republicanos no tienen ningún interés en resolver la crisis humanitaria en la frontera y el hecho de que los republicanos en la Cámara de Representantes no permitan que el proyecto de ley sea debatido y votado es cínico y cruel. Que a los demócratas en la Cámara de Representantes se les niegue la oportunidad de representar a sus electores en este tema nacional es falta de respeto a nuestra democracia. Mientras aumenta la crisis en la frontera, los republicanos de la Cámara de Representantes cargarán con la responsabilidad de esa crisis. Aunque hacer nada no es opción, este proyecto de ley del Senado tiene un largo camino por recorrer antes de que yo le preste mi apoyo.”
