Rep. Grijalva Statement on the One Year Anniversary of Trump’s Termination of the DACA Program
WASHINGTON, DC—Today marks one year since the Trump Administration announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Since the announcement, courts have blocked the administration’s decision to end the program, and its future remains uncertain.
“One year later, and we still see the trauma and hardship inflicted on DACA recipients by Trump’s callous decision to terminate the program without reason,” said Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. “While these young people worry about their families, careers, education, and future in this country, congressional Republicans refuse to take action and join Democrats in a bipartisan solution to protect them. Trump’s impulsive decision started this crisis in the first place, and Republicans willingly caved to his rhetoric and held Dreamers hostage for the White House’s nativist demands. It’s time for Republicans to stop using Dreamers as a bargaining chip for their anti-immigrant agenda and take action on a legislative solution that protects Dreamers and provides them with a pathway to citizenship.”
Last Friday, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen blocked an attempt by Texas to end the DACA program. The case will most likely go to the U.S. Supreme Court. In the meantime, DACA recipients can continue to renew their permits, although new applications for the program will not be accepted.
