Rep. Grijalva Statement on Republican Attempts to Dismantle the Affordable Care Act in the Supreme Court

TUCSONToday, the U.S. Supreme Court, under a newly-cemented conservative majority, heard oral arguments for California v. Texas, a case brought by Republican state officials that would end the Affordable Care Act. The Trump Administration is a supporter of the Republican-led case that would gut consumer protections for those with preexisting conditions and immediately result in 21 million uninsured Americans. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“It is the epitome of cruelty that the Trump Administration and Republican leaders are trying to rip lifesaving healthcare away from millions of Americans in the middle of a pandemic and economic crisis. Despite a greater need than ever to ensure comprehensive coverage for all Americans, Trump and his enablers have chosen to prioritize their own political interests over the health and well-being of American families. While they’ve spent over a decade complaining about it, they don’t even have a plan to replace it. It’s the height of irresponsibility.

“The Affordable Care Act has exponentially expanded access to meaningful healthcare for millions of Americans. It ended discrimination against those with preexisting conditions, increased access to preventative care, and expanded Medicaid to cover more people. Numerous court challenges have upheld its constitutionality, and I urge the Supreme Court to base their ruling on the facts and the law, not political considerations.”
