Rep. Grijalva Statement on the Resignation of DHS Secretary Nielsen

WASHINGTON— Yesterday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“Secretary Nielsen was Donald Trump’s willing foot-soldier who implemented his horrific policies that destroyed families and left a dark stain on the conscience of our nation. Under her watch and orders, children were ripped from their mothers’ arms at the border and were never reunified with their parents. While her departure is welcome, I am resigned to the fact that Trump will pick a new DHS Secretary with the same extremism and xenophobia that reflect his rhetoric and worldview.

“The Senate must confirm someone who will put forth real solutions that fix our broken immigration system and treat immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees with the respect and dignity they deserve. No matter who that replacement is, I will continue to hold the Trump Administration and the Department of Homeland Security accountable and fight any attempts to further dehumanize asylum seekers and terrorize immigrant communities.”

Rep. Grijalva has repeatedly called for Secretary Nielsen to resign, and in November 2018, led a letter of 26 Members of Congress calling for her resignation.
