Rep. Grijalva Statement on Trump Administration’s Iran War-Mongering

WASHINGTON— Today, the Trump Administration confirmed it had abruptly decided to cancel a preemptivemilitary strike on Iran. This comes at the heels of the Trump Administration blaming Iran for attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and a confrontation over a U.S. spy drone shot down by Iran this week. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:

“President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and John Bolton have beaten the drums of war for months now, steadily building a flawed case that will only plunge the U.S. into another endless war in the Middle East. Instead of using diplomacy to ease tensions in the region and facilitate dialogue between the two countries, the Trump Administration has pursued a reckless foreign policy agenda that could unnecessarily bring us to the brink of war. There is little more shameful than endangering our brave servicemen and women under false pretenses for political gain. One can’t help but wonder if the President sees this as yet another political opportunity.

“Whether it was foolishly ending the Iran Nuclear Deal or aggressively militarizing the Middle East, the Trump Administration’s own provocative actions have led to this moment. They must do everything in their power to avert a disastrous and costly war with Iran and must immediately recognize they do not have the power to circumvent the constitutional authority of Congress to authorize the use of force.”
