Rep. Grijalva Statement on Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Comments: ?An Attempt to Influence the Midterm Elections’
TUCSON, ARIZ.— Today, President Trump expressed interest in ending birthright citizenship. This follows weeks of immigration enforcement actions that included sending troops to the borderlands and a rumored executive order that would block individuals from Central America from seeking asylum at the southern border. In response, Rep. Grijalva issued the following statement:
“For weeks, President Trump has stooped to incredible lows to create a culture of lies and fear to save the Republican Party in the upcoming elections. Whether militarizing border communities, closing our doors to asylum seekers, or violating the Constitution and ending birthright citizenship; Trump’s baseless actions and fearmongering falsehoods put his own political goals ahead of American values and the law. Comments like these should be taken for what they are: attempts by an unhinged, uninformed president to stoke the fires of anti-immigrant sentiment and influence the midterm elections.”
