TUCSON—Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration could move forward with billions in military funding to build his border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. In a 5-4 decision, the justices overturned two lower court decisions ruling that the Trump Administration did not have the authority to use money for the wall that Congress had not appropriated. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:
“Trump circumvented the constitutional authority of Congress and declared a fake national emergency so that he could build his monument to his racist policies along our Southern border. I’m extremely disappointed in this decision that will embolden the President’s recklessness and set a dangerous precedent for the future.
“A border wall is wholly unnecessary and a wasteful use of taxpayer dollars and will do nothing more than wreak havoc on precious habitats, militarize border communities, and divide tribal lands. This fight is not over, and I will continue opposing the President’s efforts to steal money from the American taxpayer to fund his shameful xenophobic wall.”
