Rep. Grijalva on Trump’s Comments on Delaying the Election: ?Beyond Unhinged’
WASHINGTON— Today, President Donald Trump tweeted that the November election should be delayed alleging potential voter fraud as millions of Americans plan to vote by mail in the upcoming election. In response, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump is resorting to blatant authoritarianism to deflect from his disastrous failure to combat COVID-19 and the ensuing economic crisis. Throughout his presidency—and especially over the past couple of weeks—Trump has made it clear he views the role of U.S. President as a dictatorship. Whether it’s unleashing federal agents on peaceful protesters, undermining the freedom of the press and pushing false information, working with foreign powers to attack the integrity of our elections, or refusing to accept judicial rulings that require immigrant children to be treated with decency; Trump’s actions are beyond unhinged. They threaten the very heart of our democracy.
“Make no mistake, Trump cannot postpone the election because he doesn’t have the authority. That authority rests with Congress. I’ll continue protecting the health of my constituents along with their right to vote by ensuring they can safely cast their ballot in the 2020 elections. We will remain vigilant and fight Donald Trump’s false narrative on voter fraud. We will observe Election Day on November 3, and the people will have the opportunity to have their voice heard—whether Trump likes the results or not.”
