WASHINGTON— Yesterday, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva sent a letter to the House Committee on Appropriations and the House Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations urging them to include language in the Department of Defense (DOD) FY20 Appropriations Bill that would prohibit the transfer of funds within DOD for President Trump’s border wall construction. This comes after the Pentagon notified Congress of its intent to transfer $1 billion to construct 57 miles of fencing in El Paso, Texas and Yuma, Arizona. The letter read in part:
“While Chairman Visclosky denied the Department of Defense’s request to use Defense funds for border wall construction, the Department of Defense has indicated that it will attempt to illegally move forward and transfer funds to construct President Trump’s xenophobic border wall. I therefore request that you also include bill language in the FY20 Department of Defense Appropriations bill that will explicitly prohibit funds from being transferred for border wall construction, including through Section 284 counterdrug authority account.”
