Tucson, Ariz.– Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva will deliver the keynote speech at the Fred G. Acosta Job Corps Center Alumni Day on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The event, which begins at 9:00 a.m., will include workshops for graduates on fiscal responsibility, internship opportunities, employment and other related issues.
“The importance of good, affordable job training to our economic recovery can’t be overstated,” Grijalva said. “The Fred G. Acosta Center has been helping generations of Southern Arizonans get and keep good jobs, and I’m very proud to be speaking with this year’s graduates about their role in getting our community’s economy back on track.”
Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through career and academic training. The Job Corps program is authorized by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998.
The Fred G. Acosta Job Corps Center is overseen by the San Francisco Regional Office of Job Corps. The center opened in 1979 as the Tucson Job Corps Center. In 1992, the center name was changed to honor Fred G. Acosta, who served as the center’s first director for eleven years.
