Rep. Grijalva Statement on New Development in Proposed Detention Facility in Marana, AZ

Friday, February 27, 2026

Tucson, AZ — Congresswoman Adelita S. Grijalva released the following statement after ICE published a sole-source agreement with Management and Training Corporation, a private for-profit company, to provide detention services at a former state prison in Marana, Arizona. The agreement confirms prior reports that a federal immigration detention facility may open at the site.

Last week, Rep. Grijalva led a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem with her colleagues Rep. Stanton and Rep. Ansari demanding answers about the proposed facility. She previously joined her colleagues in writing to Secretary Noem about another proposed site in Surprise, Arizona that could host as many as 10,000 detainees in warehouse conditions.

“I am deeply concerned by the Trump Administration’s rush to open this facility with zero transparency or community input,” said Rep. Grijalva. “Let’s be clear: detention expansion is a money-making machine for the private prison industry. Arbitrary deportation quotas mean more beds, bigger contracts, and more profits for companies that have poured millions into Trump’s campaign. Time and again, these facilities have operated with too little oversight and accountability – with devastating human consequences, including dozens of deaths in custody. Our community deserves transparency, and families deserve an immigration system rooted in dignity and due process, not corporate profit.”
