Rep. Grijalva Statement on Supreme Court Decision   Gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Adelita S. Grijalva released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to limit a key provision of the Voting Rights Act that helped ensure representation for communities of color in the drawing of congressional district boundaries:

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court on the Voting Rights Act guts our nation’s most important safeguard against discrimination in our democracy. By making it harder to challenge unfair maps, the Court is putting communities of color — including communities I represent in Congress — at greater risk of being shut out of representation and having our voices diluted. This ruling is part of a broader effort to change the rules because Republicans know they can’t win fair and square during the midterm elections. I will keep fighting to ensure every voter has an equal voice in our democracy.”
