Washington, D.C. – Representative Raúl M. Grijalva’s legislation, a bill to designate the Santa Cruz Valley a National Heritage Area, H.R. 1855, was considered before the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands in a hearing on the bill today.

H.R. 1855 now awaits consideration by the full Committee on Natural Resources.

By designating the region as a National Heritage Area, the legislation will help preserve and promote the cultural and natural resources in the Santa Cruz Valley.

“I am pleased to hear testimony on this bill today,” said Rep. Grijalva. “This designation is an opportunity for us to promote the rich, diverse heritage and the inspiring natural wonders of the Santa Cruz Valley. Designation will encourage voluntary conservation of significant natural, cultural, and working landscapes, while providing economic opportunities for local businesses through increased tourism.”

Linda Mayro, Cultural Resources Manager for Pima County, testified before the Subcommittee in support of the bill.

National Heritage Areas differ from National Parks and other types of Federal designations because they do not impose Federal zoning or regulations on land use.

The Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area would encompass roughly 3,300 square miles in southern Arizona, bordering Mexico.
