WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03) voted to uphold the rule of law and hold former President Trump’s crony Steve Bannon in criminal contempt for his refusal to cooperate with the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.
“Steve Bannon made a career in conspiracy theories and espousing fear and hatred. He was appointed by President Trump to serve in the White House to continue to sow a message of discord and an us-vs-them mentality to drive Americans apart. It’s no surprise that he may be involved in an effort to overturn a democratically-held election,” said Rep. Grijalva. “The message today is clear: Anyone who stands in the way of Congress’ investigation into the genesis of the January 6th attack on Congress and the nexus between the insurrectionists and the former President’s plan to overturn a democratic election will be held accountable. No one is above of the law.”
Following certification of a criminal contempt in the U.S. House of Representatives, it will be referred to the Department of Justice for evaluation and investigation. Any individual who is found liable for contempt of Congress would be guilty of a crime that may result in a fine and between one and 12 months’ imprisonment.
