WASHINGTON – Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03) released the following statement after President Biden announced the U.S. Department of Education would provide $5.8 billion in relief for students holding federal student loan debt defrauded at any of the 91 Corinthian College campuses nationwide.
“The Biden administration’s action to discharge student loans and alleviate the financial burden for victims of Corinthian College’s for-profit scheme is great progress and welcome news. These students were preyed upon with false promises of a quality education and saddled with crushing student debt in the process. They have suffered enough.
Thanks to President Biden and his administration, this debt relief will lift a significant weight off the shoulders of many people and working class families. It’s imperative the Department of Education continue to seek justice for those students who were defrauded. I look forward to working with President Biden and his administration to build upon this action and urge him to issue an executive order as quickly as possible to fulfill the promise of broader student loan debt forgiveness.”
The Biden administration’s student debt forgiveness will help 10,210 borrowers in Arizona duped by Corinthian College and forgive nearly $112 million in student loans. Rep. Grijalva has long worked to address the predatory and deceptive practices that for-profit colleges use to attract students without providing the education they deserve. He has introduced The Protect Financial Aid for Students and Taxpayers Act in the House of Representatives.
